Netflix came to Nigeria in 2016 and its strategy in the market has evolved over the years. Now, it is commissioning original movies and series, but to what end? Let's find out.
Now, about Netflix's entry, I think it is very good for the movie industry. Of course, those whose content gets picked up by Netflix will benefit more. However, the industry as a whole should reap form exposure to a greater international audience. Other small independent producers should enjoy more patronage as Nigerians pick up the habit of going online for everything including movies. But I wonder how long we will Netflix and Chill considering the government's repressive policies. Last week we heard that IrokoTV will start divesting its Nigerian concerns.
Very insightful piece on the future of content. Still a bet by Netflix's team. However i reckon that if a similar/greater level of acceptance given to Afrobeats is achieved with movies in other climes, then it might be a winning strategy.
